Thunder, Eagles start soccer season with shutout wins

SHELBURNE – The Westside Thunder of Orangeville and Emmanuel Christian Eagles of Fergus both posted a pair of shutout victories as District 4 high school girls’ soccer started its season with the first of two regular-season tournaments Wednesday at Centre Dufferin District High School.

The Eagles blanked the Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest 3-0 and the Norwell Varsity Reds of Palmerston 2-0 while the Thunder dropped the host Centre Dufferin Royals 12-0 and Norwell 8-0.

League play is to resume Wednesday with five games at the Palmerston Arena fields.

Top four teams qualify for the playoffs that are to be held May 16 at a site yet to be determined. Semifinals will be held in the morning. Losers advance to the consolation final at 12:30 p.m. and winners are to meet in the championship final at 2 p.m.

Marisa Crane led Westside with a five-goal outing while goalkeepers Mikayla Sproule and Melakee Kerkhoff shared the shutout.

 

Emmanuel Christian 3 Wellington Heights 0

Hanna VanSydenbergh struck for a pair of goals for Emmanuel Christian while Hailey VanSydenbergh scored the other one. Lydia DeJonge had the clean sheet.

 

Westside 8 Norwell 0

Westside received two goals apiece from Bigles and Gillard and one each from Crane, Keskhot, Kirkland and Witor. First names were not reported.

 

Emmanuel Christian 2 Norwell 0

K. Kottelenberg and E. Sikkema scored the goals in the game. First names were not reported.
