Thunder, Eagles to meet to decide top spot

GUELPH – There’s one game to go in the District 4 high school girls’ soccer league’s regular season and it will decide the order of the top two finishers.

The Westside Thunder of Orangeville and Emmanuel Christian Eagles of Fergus are to play Friday at 12 noon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Thunder and Eagles remained undefeated Monday as they posted wins while playing about half of their games on adjacent fields at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Westside downed the Wellington Heights Wolverines 6-0 while Emmanuel Christian defeated the Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne 2-0. The Westside-Wellington Heights game started an hour earlier than the Emmanuel Christian-Centre Dufferin match that began shortly after the other game started its second half.

Alexandra Sikkema and Karlee Brouwer connected for the goals for Emmanuel Christian while Tessa Vanveen had the clean sheet.

Westside and Emmanuel Christian are to enter Friday’s games with 3-0-0 records. Norwell Varsity Reds will finish third at 2-2-0 and face the second-place finisher in next week’s semifinals.

Centre Dufferin will finish fourth at 1-3-0 and play the first-place finisher in the semifinals.

Wellington Heights will finish fifth at 0-4-0 and will not qualify for the playoffs.

The semifinal is set for May 21 and the final is to go May 24.
