Thunder seniors, Wolverines juniors keep volleyball crowns
ORANGEVILLE – The Westside Thunder and Wellington Heights Wolverines retained their District 4 high school boys volleyball senior and junior titles respectively in the league’s one-day playoffs Wednesday at Westside.
The Thunder seniors and Wolverines juniors had won the 2019 championship honours while the 2020 season fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wednesday in senior, Westside swept the Norwell Varsity Reds 3-0 in the semifinals before sweeping Wellington Heights 3-0 in the final.
The Thunder won the semifinal match 25-15, 25-18, 25-9 and took the final 25-16, 25-10, 25-10.
That completed an undefeated season for Westside as the Thunder had won all five of its matches, dropping just one set in the process. Wellington Heights had finished second at 4-1.
The Wolverines had slipped by third-place Erin Raiders 3-2 in the other semifinal. Wellington Heights rallied to win a close one 22-25, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 18-16.
Fourth-place Norwell won the consolation final 2-0 over Erin. The Varsity Reds won 25-17, 25-21.
The title win was Westside’s third in a row after the Thunder stopped Norwell’s 14-year grasp of the championship plaque in 2018.
In junior, Wellington Heights won the final 3-1 over Westside.
The Wolverines prevailed 25-15, 19-25, 25-12, 25-21.
Westside reached the final with a 3-0 victory over Erin in the semifinal. The Thunder won 25-19, 26-24, 25-18.
Wellington Heights had defeated Centre Dufferin in the semifinals.
The Wolverines had claimed league honours for the first time in 2019 while either Norwell or Westside had won every title since Arthur won it in 2001, three years before the school closed.
