
Trend continues as Tavistock tops 81’s in Palmerston
PALMERSTON – The Tavistock Royals are on the verge of ousting the Minto 81’s from the WOAA senior AA men’s hockey playoffs following a 4-2 victory at the Palmerston arena Sunday.
The result gives Tavistock a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven quarter-final series that has seen the visiting team win each game.

Sunday, Minto scored the lone goal of the first period before Tavistock rallied to take a 2-1 lead into the third. The Royals stretched the lead to two goals with a power-play goal at 6:12 of the final period before the hosts cut the gap back to a single goal with 61 seconds to play. Tavistock completed the scoring with an empty-net marker 13 seconds later.
Adam Kawalec and Stephen Gibson scored the goals for the 81’s while assists were awarded to Jordan Delaurier, Gibson, Blair Buchart and Caleb Warren.
Mike Noyes had two unassisted goals for Tavistock while Drew Gerth and Sean Kienapple (also unassisted) netted the other goals. Patrick Vulgan and Kienapple assisted on Gerth’s goal.
The teams each registered 23 shots on net. Minto was scoreless on six power plays while Tavistock went 1-for-3 on its power play.
Daniel DeKoening had 20 saves in net for the 81’s while Jensen Van Boekel had 21 for Tavistock.
Sixth game of the series is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Tavistock. If the 81’s win that game, they’ll host the seventh and deciding game on Family Day Monday at 2 p.m. at the Palmerston arena.
Minto finished fourth at the completion of the regular season at 14-5-0-1 while Tavistock was a point behind in fifth at 13-5-0-2. They also split their two regular-season games with the visiting team both times.
The Ripley Wolves are the lone team to have already won their quarter-final series as they swept the Petrolia Squires 4-0. The Seaforth Centenaires lead the Durham Thundercats 3-0 in their series while the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks lead the Creemore Coyotes 2-1 in the other series.
