U Sports hockey, volleyball championships cancelled
HALIFAX – About an hour after the Guelph Gryphons suffered their quarter-final loss to the Saint Mary’s Huskies at the U Sports University Cup national university men’s hockey championship tournament at Halifax’s Scotiabank Centre, the governing body cancelled the tournament due to coronavirus concerns.
The men’s hockey tournament wasn’t the only U Sports national championship to be cancelled Thursday night.
The women’s hockey tournament at Charlottetown, P.E.I., was at the same stage as the men’s tournament – two games of the quarter-finals had been played – when it, too, was cancelled.
Also cancelled were the U Sports volleyball championship tournaments, the women at Calgary and the men at Winnipeg. Play was to begin Friday in both.
