
U20 Canadians toppled by Zimbabwe at U of G
GUELPH – The Canadian U20 men’s squad fell 32-24 to Zimbabwe in their opening match of the four-team U20 Canada Conference tournament on the University of Guelph’s south field, the grass field, Saturday evening.
Zimbabwe scored the first 20 points of the match and led 20-7 at halftime before the Canadians came storming back to go ahead 24-20 by the midway point of the second half. But Zimbabwe rallied from there with a pair of tries by Tawonga Ablant to complete the scoring and secure the win.

Relmu Wilson-Valdes, Mehdi Porchet and Ethan Fryer each had a try for Canada while Jamin Hodgins converted all three tries and also added a penalty conversion.
Ablant finished with three tries for Zimbabwe while Panashe Zuze and Emmanuel Farawu each had one and Takudzwa Musingwini had a convert and a penalty conversion.
Canada’s roster for the match included four members of the Guelph Gryphons varsity squad with David Scollon and Kobe Faust starting and Michael Di Lella Jr. and Jacob Ince listed as replacements.
Earlier Saturday, Uruguay defeated Chile 27-3 in the first game of the tournament.
Pedro Marsico had two tries for Uruguay while Guillermo Storace also had a try and Juan Garese had two converts and a penalty conversion. Scorer of the other try wasn’t available.
Damian Fliegel had a penalty conversion for Chile.
Uruguay led 20-3 at halftime.
Play in the tournament is to continue Thursday at the U of G with Zimbabwe playing Uruguay at 4:30 p.m. and Canada taking on Chile at 6:30 p.m.
The tournament is to wrap up on Aug. 23 with Zimbabwe playing Chile at 4:30 p.m. and Canada and Uruguay meeting at 6:30 p.m.
