Unbeaten Gryphon hoops women hand Brock first loss

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons rallied in the fourth quarter to down the Brock Badgers 72-65 in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at Brock’s Bob Davis Gym.

The Badgers entered the fourth quarter with a two-point lead (52-50) and held a 65-64 lead with a minute and a half to play before the Gryphs scored the final eight points of the game.

Guelph led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter and 39-38 at halftime.

While the Gryphs remained undefeated at 3-0, the loss was the first of the season for the Badgers who fell to 3-1. Guelph is third in the West Division while Brock is tied for second in the Central Division.

Burke Bechard led the Gryphs with 15 points while Ivana Vujadinovic had 14 and Skyla Minaker netted 10. Bechard also had 13 rebounds and six assists while MacKeely Shantz had four steals.

Guelph native Jessica Morris had a game-high 17 points for Brock while Samantha Keltos and Melissa Tatti each netted 16. Morris grabbed nine rebounds while Tatti had eight assists and three steals.

The Gryphs are to play the McMaster Marauders (tied with Brock for second in Central Division at 3-1) Saturday at 6 p.m. at McMaster’s Burridge Gymnasium.
