Unbeaten Ryerson hands Gryphon hoops women first loss

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons faded in the second half as they suffered their first setback of the OUA women’s basketball league season as they fell 74-59 to the Ryerson Rams Wednesday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The Gryphs were outscored 48-26 in the second half.

The Rams were up 18-11 at the end of the first quarter before the Gryphs rallied to lead 33-26 at halftime. However, Ryerson regained the lead in the third quarter and stretched their advantage to 48-42 by the end of the quarter.

Sarah Holmes led the Gryphs with 17 points while Ivana Vujadinovic had 16 and Burke Bechard added 11. Holmes hauled down seven rebounds while Skyla Minaker had five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Ryerson had five players hit double digits in scoring – Cara Tiemens with 15, Bronwyn Williams 14, Hayley Robertson 13, Katherine Follis 11 and Jama Bin-Edward 10. Marin Scotten grabbed 14 rebounds while Robertson had four assists and Bin-Edward and Tiemens each had three steals.

The Gryphs shot 34 per cent on field goals, 29 per cent on three-pointers and 73 per cent on free throws while Ryerson shot 37 per cent on field goals, seven per cent on three-pointers and 67 per cent of free throws.

The result leaves Ryerson at 2-0 and the Gryphs at 2-1.

The game was the second of five consecutive road games for the Gryphs. They’re to play the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday at 6 p.m., Queen’s Gaels Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. and York Lions Nov. 10 at 6 p.m.
