Union dropped by Simcoe County to start season

BARRIE – Guelph Union suffered a 5-1 setback to the Simcoe County Rovers in their League1 Ontario Women’s Premier season opener Saturday at J.C. Massie Field on the Georgian College campus.

Simcoe County struck for two goals in the first half and scored their third goal early in the second half before Union scored their lone goal.

The Rovers scored their other two goals in the final half-hour of the match.

Victoria Hinchliffe collected the goal for the Guelph side in her first game for the team in more than a year.

Brianne Desa had a pair of goals for Simcoe County while single goals were added by Cassidy Brooks and Soumaya Bouak. No scorer was credited for Simcoe County’s first goal of the game.

Elizabeth Brenneman was in net for Union while Mykaela Volpe was the keeper for the Rovers.

The game was the first of four consecutive road games to start the season for Union. Six of Union’s first eight games are road games, but five of their last eight are home games.

Union are to play ProStars next Saturday at the Ontario Soccer Stadium at Woodbridge. Game time is 6 p.m.
