United doubles BVB IA Waterloo to climb to second

WATERLOO – Guelph United vaulted to second in the League1 Ontario Men’s Premier soccer standings Tuesday night with a 4-2 victory over BVB International Academy of Waterloo at Warriors Field.

United has a 13-4-3 record, good for 42 points. They trail league-leading Vaughan Azzurri (15-0-3, 48) and lead the Oakville Blue Devils (12-2-5, 41), Brampton ProStars (13-5-1, 40), North Toronto Nitros (12-2-4, 40), Toronto Alliance United (11-2-6, 39) and Simcoe County Rovers (11-3-5, 38).

The win was the seventh in their last eight games and came in their fourth consecutive road game. They went 3-1-0 away from town.

Jared Agyemang struck for a pair of goals for the second game in a row to lift his team-leading total to 10 on the season. Those 10 goals have come in his last seven games.

Evan Dick and Camilo Vasconcelos scored the other goals for United.

Bai Essa Coker and Malek Aborig netted the goals for Waterloo.

Waterloo scored in the fourth minute before United responded with three in a row. The hosts rounded out the first-half scoring with a goal in injury time. United had the only goal of the second half, that one also coming in injury time.

Svyatoslav Artemenko picked up the win in the Guelph net while Jefferey Sanni was tagged with the loss in goal for Waterloo.

While United is second in the standings, it’s an inflated ranking as they’ve played more games than any of the other teams in the top seven. All teams lower than seventh in the 22-team loop have been eliminated from the playoff race.

Top six qualify for the playoffs.

Of the top seven, United has one game to play while the Blue Devils, ProStars, Alliance and the Rovers each have two and Azzurri and the Nitros each have three. Azzurri has already clinched a playoff berth and if the six behind them win all their remaining games, United will be the odd man out finishing in seventh.

None of the top seven play each other during the remainder of the regular season, meaning United is going to require some outside help if they’re to reach the postseason.

United is to complete its regular season Friday with a game against Darby FC (5-10-4) at Alumni Stadium. Game time is 8 p.m. After that they’ll have to wait to see if they did enough to qualify for the playoffs until Aug. 21, the last day any of the top seven is scheduled to play.
