Vanderlinden runs to Milton triathlon triumph
MILTON – Alex Vanderlinden of Kitchener ran to a slim win in the Milton Subaru Triathlon’s sprint triathlon Sunday at the Kelso Conservation Area.
The meet was the first of the Subaru Triathlon Series season.
Vanderlinden and Mark Bialkowski of Parry Sound battled at the head of the field throughout the race. They had identical times in the swim and Bialkowski was a second faster on the bike, leaving the race decision to come in the run. Spending 18 seconds less on the run gave Vanderlinden the win in 1:20:26.6.
Frank Sorbara of Thornhill was a close third as he got 24 seconds closer on the final stage. He ended up just under a minute behind Vanderlinden and 30 seconds behind Bialkowski.
Top female finisher was Miranda Tomenson who was 13th overall in 1:32:37.5.
Six Guelphites finished the race – Nick Moore, Andrew Glenville, Marcus Mesan, Phillip Tremblay, Benedicte Monette and Natalie McDonald.
Jacob Saunders of Shelburne won the sprint duathlon in 1:27:57.0 while Noel Thomson of Burlington was second, just under two minutes behind. Carolynne Simons of Milton was 11th overall in 1:37:27.9, the top female finisher.
Guelph finishers included Angela Hofstra, Steve Wilkie, Steve Friesen and Janis Milliken.
Team Londo Thundo of London took the sprint triathlon relay in 1:34:51.1.
Andrew Barnes of Guelph was triumphant in the sprint swim bike. He finished in 1:04:43.2 while Noah Trotman of Vaughan was second, 2:48.7 behind.
Garrett Mason won the try-a-tri.
