Varsity Blues top Gryphs in opening game of semifinal

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons fell behind early and never recovered as they dropped the opening game of the best-of-three OUA women’s hockey semifinal with the Toronto Varsity Blues 4-1 at Varsity Arena Wednesday.

Toronto scored three times in the first period including two in the final four and a half minutes of the period to grad a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

The Varsity Blues also scored midway through the second period while the Gryphs got their lone goal on a power play late in the second period.

Abby Davies scored for Guelph with help from Sydnie Miller and Chihiro Suzuki.

Isabella Greco, Celine Frappier, Natasha Athanasakos and Ali McKeown each had a goal for Toronto. Juliette Blais-Savoie, Caroline Eagles, Kaitlyn McKnight, Nikki McDonald, Emma Potter and Lauren MacDonnell each had an assist giving the Varsity Blues 10 players who each had a point in the game.

The Varsity Blues outshot the Gryphs 33-27 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while the Gryphs went 1-for-6.

Martina Fedel had 29 saves for Guelph while Erica Fryer had 26 for Toronto.

Second game of the series is set for Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre. If the Gryphs win that match, Game 3 is to go Sunday at 4 p.m. at Toronto’s Varsity Arena.

Winner of the series advances to the OUA’s championship game and also gains a berth in the U Sports national final tournament in Montreal March 16 to 19.
