Varsity Jr. Gryphs fade in fourth in loss to Essex

GUELPH – The Guelph Varsity Junior Gryphons suffered their fourth consecutive loss and third by less than 10 points when they were edged 38-35 by the Essex Ravens in Ontario Provincial Junior Football League varsity division play Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

The game was the third consecutive home contest for the Gryphs and their final home match of the season.

Essex rallied in the fourth quarter for the win as Guelph led 14-9 at the end of the first quarter, 30-16 at halftime and 33-16 after the third quarter.

Quarterback Dakota Brown completed 12 of 25 pass attempts for 187 yards and one touchdown. He wasn’t intercepted.

Juwan Jeffrey had 13 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown rushing while Brown carried the ball four times for 11 yards.

Clark Barnes caught three passes, including the touchdown strike, for 100 yards while Kenneth Morris caught three for 24 yards and Tommy Nield hauled down two passes for 55 yards.

Barnes also had two touchdowns on returns, one on a punt return and the other on a kickoff return. He returned two punts for 61 yards and two kickoffs for 129 yards.

Eric Stranz kicked two field goals, three converts and six punts for 217 yards.

On defence, Joshua Vanamelsvoort had nine tackles while Caleb Zigby had seven. Tavius Robinson had two sacks and Kieran O’Donnell and Garrison Pyle each had a sack and Robinson, Brandon Ferigo and Trevon Halstead each recovered a fumble.

Essex gained 307 yards passing and 145 rushing while the Junior Gryphs gained 187 passing and 89 rushing.

The result leaves the Junior Gryphs sixth in the Varsity West Division at 1-4-0 while Essex is second at 4-1-0.

The Junior Gryphs are to play the Cambridge Lions (3-2-0) at Waterloo Saturday at 7 p.m., London Junior Mustangs (5-0-0) at London June 30 at 8 p.m. and the Cumberland Panthers (1-4-0) at Ottawa July 15 at 6 p.m.


Junior Varsity

The Junior Varsity Junior Gryphons had their biggest offensive output of the season, but remained winless as they were downed 55-16 by the Essex Ravens at Varsity Stadium Saturday.

The Junior Gryphs scored twice as many points in the game as they had in their previous four games combined.

However, Essex led 21-3 at the end of the first quarter, 41-13 at halftime and 48-13 after the third quarter.

Quarterback Daniel Brown completed 10 of 28 pass attempts for the Junior Gryphs while Peyton Garvin completed one of three. They combined for a total of 190 yards passing.

Hadi El-Miari caught four passes for 90 yards while Cory Pryce grabbed three for 36 yards and Thomas Ness caught two for 37 yards and a touchdown.

Kyle Ilczyna had four carries for 50 yards rushing while Brown carried the ball three times for 41 yards.

Ness returned six kickoffs for 56 yards.

Ben Lane kicked three field goals, a convert and four punts for 140 yards.

Nathan Dixon had five tackles while Luis Alfieri had four.

Getting one sack apiece were Dixon, Alfieri and Andrew Riley while Riley also recovered a fumble.

Essex is tied for second in the Junior Varsity West Division at 4-1-0 while the Junior Gryphs are sixth at 0-5-0.

The Junior Gryphs are to play the division-leading Cambridge Lions (5-0-0) Saturday at 4 p.m. at Waterloo.


Regional Bantam

The Regional Bantam Junior Gryphons’ game against the TNT Express was postponed Saturday.

No make-up date has been announced.

The Junior Gryphs are 3-1-0 and TNT is 1-3-0.

The locals are to play the Toronto Jets at Brebeuf College Saturday at 4 p.m.
