Varsity Reds extend girls’ hockey title streak to four years

PALMERSTON – The Norwell Varsity Reds kept their grip on the District 4 high school girls’ hockey league crown as they edged the Wellington Heights Wolverines 1-0 in Wednesday’s championship game at the Palmerston arena.

The win gave the Varsity Reds the title for the fourth consecutive year and fifth time in six years.

The Wolverines are the only other team to win the title in the last eight years as they won it in 2013, 2014 and 2016.

Leah LeCourtois scored the lone goal of this year’s championship game while Shelby Foster recorded the shutout.

Both squads had recorded shutout wins in last week’s semifinals as Norwell blanked the Westside Thunder 3-0 and Wellington Heights won 4-0 over the Centre Dufferin Royals.

Keely Franklin, Alexa Marquardt and LeCourtois scored for Norwell in the semifinals while Alyssa Varallo had the shutout for Wellington Heights.

Norwell advances to the CWOSSA A/AA championship tournament at Waterloo and Baden March 9 and 10.
