Varsity Reds, Raiders crowned volleyball champs

PALMERSTON – The Norwell Varsity Reds and Erin Raiders claimed District 4 high school girls’ volleyball titles on their home courts Friday.

Norwell captured the senior crown with a 3-0 sweep of the Wellington Heights Wolverines while Erin took the junior final 3-2 over Norwell.

Friday saw play in both the semifinals and final in both the senior and junior leagues. First-place finisher at the end of the regular season earned the right to host their league’s Final Four tournament.

In senior, Norwell swept the Centre Dufferin Royals 3-0 in one semifinal while Wellington Heights slipped by the Westside Thunder 3-2 in the other. Norwell won 25-16, 25-13, 25-15 while Wellington Heights prevailed 21-25, 25-15, 26-24, 18-25, 15-13.

The Varsity Reds won the final 25-11, 25-13, 25-17 to stretch their streak of championship title wins to 15 consecutive victories. No other school has won the title since Central Dufferin won it in 2004.

Norwell had finished atop the league at 9-1 while Westside was second at 8-2 and Wellington Heights third at 7-3. Centre Dufferin won a tie-breaker among a three-team deadlock at 2-8 to be awarded fourth. The Varsity Reds dropped three sets all D4 season long.

In junior, Erin swept the Emmanuel Christian Eagles 3-0 in one semifinal while Norwell downed Wellington Heights 3-1 in the other. Erin won 25-23, 25-20, 25-14 while Norwell won 25-16, 21-25, 25-20, 25-20.

Erin took the final 22-25, 25-12, 16-25, 25-21, 15-11. It was their first ever junior title win.

The Raiders had completed the regular season in first at 8-2 while Norwell was second at 6-4 and Wellington Heights and Emmanuel Christian both finished at 5-5.

The D4 champions advance to next week’s CWOSSA AA championship tournament at Simcoe Wednesday and Thursday.
