Veterans Lamenta, Lowy lead Gryphon hockey women to win
GUELPH – Valerie Lamenta recorded her second consecutive shutout as the Guelph Gryphons downed the Western Mustangs 2-0 in OUA women’s hockey play at the Gryphon Centre Saturday.
Fifth-year Gryphon Lamenta stopped 32 shots for the shutout, her second in a row, second of the season and 20th as a Gryphon.
Another fifth-year Gryphon, Kaitlin Lowy, scored both goals to bring her total to six for the season and 46 as a Gryphon.
Lowy had a power-play goal in the second period and her other goal came a minute into the third.
Lauren Ianni, Gabrielle Smyth and Claire Merrick each had an assist.
Western outshot the Gryphs 32-21 and both teams had four power plays.
Carmen Lasis took the loss in net for the Mustangs.
The win was the fourth in a row for the Gryphs and came in their first of four consecutive home games.
The loss was the first of the season for the Mustangs who lead the league at 5-1-0-0. The Gryphs are third at 4-1-1-0.
The Gryphs are to host the Laurentian Voyageurs (3-2-1-1) Saturday at 2 p.m., Nipissing Lakers (2-3-2-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. and Ryerson Rams (2-2-2-0) Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m.
