Waterloo nets power-play goal in OT to edge Canes

GUELPH – Sam Cherry’s power-play goal in the second overtime period lifted the Waterloo Siskins to a 4-3 victory over the Guelph Hurricanes in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Cherry scored at 2:03 of the three-on-three period, 27 seconds after Guelph’s Keanan Stewart was sent off for hooking.

The Canes had come back from a 2-0 deficit to force the overtime.

Waterloo scored the only goal of the first period and added another goal early in the second before Niki Molson got the Canes on the board with a power-play marker nine minutes later.

Guelph tied it at 7:29 of the third period on a goal by Anthony Mota.

Getting assists for the Canes in the game were Payton McLeish, Matthew Chard and Aiden Matekovic.

Alex Lycett and Parker Casey scored in regulation time for the Siskins while Alex Potter assisted on all three goals. Tyler Dam, Justin Zuber and Lycett each had one assist.

Waterloo outshot the Canes 44-29, including a 9-1 advantage in overtime. The Siskins were 2-for-3 on their power play while the Canes were 1-for-7.

Jet Graves was tagged with the overtime loss in the Guelph net while Brett Miller had the win for Waterloo.

The Canes are seventh in the Midwestern Conference at 11-27-1-6. They’re three points behind the Brantford 99ers (13-25-2-4) and four up on the Brampton Bombers (12-30-1-0).

Waterloo improved to 24-15-1-3 with the win.

The Guelph squad has five games to go and can finish no higher than sixth in the conference. Brantford has six games to go and Brampton has seven to play.

The Canes are to play the 99ers at Brantford Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
