Weather conditions postpone most CWOSSA tournaments

GUELPH – The weather continues to play havoc with the CWOSSA boys’ basketball and girls’ volleyball championship tournaments.

The AA boys’ basketball tournament that was to have been played at St. James and Lourdes has been postponed again due to the weather conditions outside of Guelph.

The two-day tournament was originally supposed to be a Friday-Saturday affair, but Friday job action by teachers put the first day back to Thursday. Then weather on Thursday moved the tournament to a Saturday-Monday event. Now the weather has struck again and the tournament has been changed to be a Monday-Tuesday event.

Senior play on Monday is to be at Lourdes while junior play is to be at St. James. The Lourdes Crusaders are in both tournaments and are to play their opening-round games at 1:30 p.m. in both. Their second game depends on how they fare in their opener. Win the opener and they play at 7:30 p.m. Lose the opener and they play at 6 p.m.

District 4 champion Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne are also in both the senior and junior tournaments. They’re to play at 9 a.m. against St. David of Waterloo in senior. Winner plays at 3 p.m. and loser plays at 4:30 p.m. In junior, they’re to play Monsignor Doyle of Cambridge at 9 a.m. with winner getting a 3 p.m. game and the loser getting a 4:30 p.m. game.

All Tuesday games in the tournament are to be at St. James with the junior final at 6 p.m. and the senior final at 7:30 p.m.

 

AAA Boys’ Basketball

At last report, the tournament remains a Saturday-Monday affair in Kitchener and Waterloo. The seniors are to play at Kitchener’s Cameron Heights CI both days while the juniors are to play at Waterloo CI Saturday and Cameron Heights Monday.

Centennial Spartans are in the senior tournament and Saturday they’re to play Brantford’s St. John’s College at 1:30 p.m. and Cambridge’s Eastwood CI at 6 p.m. in round-robin pool play. Top two in the pool advance to Monday’s semifinals that are slated for 12 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. The final is to go Monday at 7 p.m.

Ross Royals are in the junior tournament and Saturday they’re to play Brantford CI at 1:30 p.m. and Waterloo CI at 6 p.m. in round-robin pool play. Top two in the pool get berths in Monday’s semifinals that are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. The final is to slated for Monday at 5 p.m.

 

A Boys’ Basketball

The tournament is now scheduled for Tuesday at Walkerton District Community School.

Both senior and junior are four-team affairs that feature semifinals and a final.

Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest are in the senior tournament and they’re to play Delhi DSS Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the winner going on to play in the 6 p.m. final.

Erin Raiders are in the junior tournament and they’re to play Delhi DSS at 11:30 a.m. with the winner getting a berth in the final that is scheduled for 4 p.m.

 

AAA Girls’ Volleyball

The tournament was to have been played Thursday, but was switched to Monday because of the transportation problems caused by the poor weather.

Guelph CVI Green Gaels are in senior with pool-play games Monday at the University of Waterloo Icefields facility. In pool play, the Gaels are to play Waterloo CI at 10 a.m. and Brantford CI at 11:15 a.m. Top two advance to the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. at Icefields and Kitchener’s Forest Heights CI. The final is to go at 7:30 p.m. at Forest Heights.

Ross Royals are in junior and are to play at Icefields against Kitchener’s Grand River CI at 10 a.m. and Brantford Assumption at 11:15 a.m. Semifinals are at Icefields at 2:30 p.m. and the final is set for 6 p.m. at Forest Heights.

 

AA Girls’ Volleyball

The tournament is set for Monday and Tuesday at Palmerston and Mount Forest.

Senior pool play and semifinals are at Norwell DSS in Palmerston Monday while junior pool play and semifinals are at Wellington Heights SS in Mount Forest Monday.

Both finals are Tuesday at Norwell with the junior match going at 1 p.m. and the senior final following at 3 p.m.

Bishop Macdonell Celtics and Norwell Varsity Reds are represented in both senior and junior.

Bishop Mac seniors are to play Holy Trinity of Simcoe at 10:15 a.m., John Diefenbaker of Hanover at 12:45 p.m. and Paris DSS at 3:15 p.m. in pool play. Top two in each pool advance to the semifinals that are to start around 4:30 p.m.

Norwell seniors are to play Waterloo St. David at 9 a.m., Galt GI of Cambridge at 11:30 a.m. and Sacred Heart of Walkerton at 2 p.m.

Bishop Mac juniors are to play Holy Trinity at 10:15 a.m., St. Mary’s of Owen Sound at 12:45 p.m. and Pauline Johnson CVS of Brantford at 3:15 p.m. in pool play. Top two in each pool go on to the semifinals that are to start at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Norwell juniors are to play Waterloo St. David at 9 a.m., Glenview Park at 11:30 a.m. and Grey Highlands

at 2 p.m.

 

A Girls’ Volleyball

The tournament is now scheduled for Monday at Walkerton District Community School.

Senior is a six-team affair that features round-robin pool play, semifinals and a final while junior is a four-team affair that features a round-robin followed by a 5:30 p.m. final.

Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest are in both senior and junior.

In senior, the Wolverines are to play Walkerton DCS at 9 a.m. and Breslau’s Woodland Christian at 1 p.m. Top two in each pool advance to the semifinals set for 3:30 p.m. while the tournament final is to be at 7 p.m.

In junior, Wellington Heights is to play Delhi DSS at 10 a.m., Kincardine DSS at 12 p.m. and Kitchener’s Rockway Mennonite at 2 p.m. Top two at the end of the round-robin are to meet in the 5:30 p.m. final.

 

District 4/10 Hockey

Transportation problems caused by poor weather forced the postponement of the D4/10 boys hockey semifinals Thursday and one of the D10 girls’ hockey semifinals Wednesday.

Norwell Varsity Reds are to play the Orangeville Bears in a boys’ league semifinal Monday at 2 p.m. at Orangeville’s Tony Rose arena.

The postponements also caused a Ross Royals boys-girls doubleheader Monday at the Victoria Road arena.

The Ross boys are to play the Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne in a semifinal at 11:30 a.m. while the Ross girls’ are to play a semifinal against the Centennial Spartans at 2 p.m.

Bishop Macdonell Celtics were forced to forfeit their girls’ semifinal against the Centre Wellington Falcons Wednesday due to a lack of goaltenders. Their lone goalie was hurt playing rep hockey Monday night, hours after she helped the Royals post an overtime victory over the Lourdes Crusaders in the D10 quarter-finals.

The CWOSSA boys’ AAA tournament, boys’ A/AA tournament at Waterford and girls’ A/AA tournament at Waterloo and Baden are to go March 9 and 10 while the girls’ AAA tournament at Baden is slated for March 10 and 11.
