Welland takes another close one from Guelph Royals
GUELPH – One thing the Guelph Royals know about playing the Welland Jackfish this Intercounty Baseball League season, it’s going to be a close game.
That was the case again Saturday night at Hastings Stadium as Welland used a solo homer by Bryce O’Farrell in the ninth inning to secure a 3-1 victory.
The match was the fifth and last of the season series between the teams and Welland won four of them – three by two runs or less. The other win for the Jackfish was a 16-8 romp while the Royals won by a run in Welland last week.
This time Welland also scored single runs in the first and fourth innings while Justin Interisano clubbed a moon-shot solo homer in the seventh.
The Royals were held to five hits in the game – three off starter Euclides Leyer and two off reliever Christian Young. Leyer had to be replaced when he injured himself warming up for the sixth inning. He had five strikeouts and issued the game’s only walk. Young struck out seven of the 12 batters he faced.
Brett Lawson was a hard-luck loser after a strong outing on the mound for the Royals. He pitched the complete game, yielding three runs (two earned) off six hits and he had five strikeouts.
Interisano’s homer and a double by Brendan Keys were Guelph’s extra-base hits in the game. Singles were clubbed by Kyle Kush, Josh Garton and Angel Villalona.
Brendon Dadson had two singles for Welland while O’Farrell added his homer and Brandon Nicholson hit a double. Andrew Mercier and Vaughn Bryan each hit a single.
Both teams made the most of their base runners as Welland stranded two and Guelph left four on.
And both teams turned a double play.
The game was Guelph’s fifth in eight days. They’re 3-2 in that stretch and 14-13 overall, good for fourth while Welland’s third at 14-10.
The Royals are to play the eighth-place Brantford Red Sox (3-22) at Brantford’s Anderson Stadium Sunday at 2 p.m. and host the fifth-place Hamilton Cardinals (12-13) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings Stadium.
