Wellington Heights grabs another slim win in senior final

ORANGEVILLE – The Wellington Heights Wolverines captured the District 4 high school senior girls’ basketball title Monday with a 36-32 victory over the Westside Thunder at Westside.

Nina Rodrigues led the Woines with eight points while Marissa Cottingham followed with seven.

Leah VanderByl had a game-high 11 for Westside while Alex Lafon added eight.

The teams had tied for top spot with 9-1 records and the closeness of the final continued the trend set during the regular season when the teams each scored a close win on the road.

Westside was awarded first place and the right to host the final thanks to a season-opening 35-28 win over Wellington Heights in Mount Forest Sept. 25. The Wolverines slipped by the Thunder 37-32 at Orangeville Oct. 16.

For Wellington Heights, the championship win is their third in four years and fifth in seven years. They dethroned the Thunder who have eight championship wins in 13 years. No team other than the Wolverines or Thunder have won the title in 10 years.

Both teams move on the CWOSSA regional championship tournaments. Wellington Heights is to play in the A tournament at Meaford Friday and Saturday while Westside is to compete in the AA tournament at Simcoe Thursday and Friday.
