West Division men’s soccer awards for Gryphons Zis, Kafeero

GUELPH – Guelph Gryphons midfielder Alex Zis and fullback Moses Kafeero captured OUA men’s soccer West Division major awards.

Zis was named the division’s most valuable player while Kafeero was the rookie of the year.

Zis netted eight goals and had a league-high 16 assists in his return to the Gryphons following two seasons of NCAA soccer with the South Florida Bulls.

Kafeero was a defensive standout this season.

Other major award winners in the division were Christian Cossidente of the McMaster Marauders (community service) and Lucio Ianiero of the Brock Badgers (coach of the year).

Zis was also one of three Gryphons named to the division’s all-star team. Zis and defender Ian Vidovich were named to the first team while midfielder Manveer Gill was named to the second team.

The Gryphs are to play the Carleton Ravens in the OUA semifinals Friday at 4 p.m. at York University’s Alumni Field. York and the Toronto Varsity Blues are to meet in the other semifinal at 7 p.m.

Winners advance to Sunday’s gold-medal game at 5 p.m. while the losers will play in the bronze-medal game at 2 p.m.
