Western hands Gryphon lacrosse men first setback

LONDON – Two goals in the fourth quarter lifted the Western Mustangs to a 7-6 victory over the Guelph Gryphons in CUFLA men’s field lacrosse play Saturday at Mustangs Field, the loss being the first of the season for the Gryphs.

The teams had been tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter before Western shot ahead 5-2 by halftime. The Gryphs came back to grab a 6-5 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Gavin Thibeault, Liam Aston, Robert Baxter, Matthew Allen, Ben Doherty and Cole Wilkinson each scored a goal for the Gryphs. Thibeault, Aston, Baxter and Jabe Verbeek each had an assist.

Connor Murphy had a hat trick for Western while Scott Del Zotto scored twice and Chris da Silva and Chris Dong netted single goals. Jacob Hickey and Joe Greig each had an assist.

Shots on goal were not recorded.

Cam MacLeod was in net for the Gryphs and Michael Orlando was in net for Western.

Western leads the West Division at 9-1 while the Gryphs are second at 8-1 with one game to go in their regular season – Sunday afternoon in Sudbury against the Laurentian Voyageurs (0-9).

If the Gryphs win Sunday they’ll finish first in the division thanks to a 12-5 win over Western at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Sept. 25.
