Western Mustangs shut down Gryphon lacrosse men

LONDON – The Western Mustangs struck for the final nine goals of the game as they dropped the Guelph Gryphons 14-3 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Friday night at Mustangs Field.

Western led 5-1 at the end of the first quarter before the Gryphs cut the gap to 5-3 midway through the second quarter. However, Guelph wouldn’t score again as Western ran away with the match. The hosts led 7-3 at halftime and 10-3 at the end of the third quarter.

Mike Berger had two goals and an assist for the Gryphs while Mitchell Ogilvie scored the other goal.

Kyle Dawson had a four-goal outing for Western while Cole Davis had a hat trick. Julian Simeoni added a pair of goals while single goals were netted by Cody Ward, Jonathan Gagliardi, Nikolai Farrus, Patrick Gamble and Tristan Simeoni. Ward assisted on four goals while single assists were given to Davis, Julian Simeoni, Gagliardi and Jon Greig.

Manraj Nijjar picked up the win in net for Western while Hayden Walsh was in net for the Gryphs.

The loss evens the Gryphs’ record at 1-1 while the game was the first of the season for Western.

The Gryphs are to play the Laurentian Voyageurs (0-1) at Sudbury Sunday.
