Westside adds another win in girls’ rugby

GUELPH – The Westside Thunder made it two wins in a row to complete the District 4/10 high school girls’ rugby league’s regular season as they slipped by the Wellington Heights Wolverines 29-26 at the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field Friday.

Leah Vanderbyl scored three tries for Westside while Madeline Schindler scored the other two and Sylvanna Bolzon kicked a pair of converts.

Kyla Pacheco had a try and three converts for Wellington Heights while the other tries were scored by P. Kruizenga, L. Rice and C. Noble.

The result settled third and fourth in the final Pool A standings. Erin Raiders finished atop the pool at 4-0-0 and were followed by Bishop Macdonell Celtics at 3-1-0, Westside at 2-2-0, Wellington Heights at 1-3-0 and Norwell Varsity Reds at 0-4-0.

Pool B finished its regular season Thursday. Ross Royals were first at 4-0-0, Orangeville Scarlet Bears second at 3-1-0, Centre Wellington Falcons third at 2-2-0, Guelph CVI Green Gaels fourth at 1-3-0 and Centennial Spartans fifth at 0-4-0.

The fifth-place finishers failed to qualify for the playoffs. The quarter-finals feature first in one pool hosting fourth in the other and second in one pool hosting third in the other.

The quarter-finals are to start Monday with Wellington Heights playing at Ross and Bishop Mac hosting Centre Wellington. Tuesday has Erin hosting Guelph CVI and Orangeville hosting town rival Westside.
