Westside and Norwell to meet for D4 soccer crown

ORANGEVILLE – As expected, the Westside Thunder advanced to Friday’s District 4 high school girls’ soccer final. Unexpectedly, their opponent will be the Norwell Varsity Reds.

The first-place Thunder dumped the fourth-place Centre Dufferin Royals 8-1 in semifinal play Tuesday at Orangeville.

Reegan Gregg struck for four goals for Westside while single goals were added by Sara Reynolds, Reegan Scott, Bailey Wilson and Jenna Witor.

Alexis McKechnie scored the lone goal for Centre Dufferin.

The third-place Norwell Varsity Reds gained their berth in the final with a 3-2 victory over the second-place Emmanuel Christian Eagles in penalty kicks in the other semifinal played at Victoria Park in Fergus.

All of the goals came in the shootout as the teams battled scoreless through regulation time and 20 minutes of overtime.

Friday’s final is set for 10 a.m. at Westside.

The Thunder defeated the Varsity Reds 11-0 in regular-season play May 1.

Westside is looking for its first D4 title since 2010 while Norwell last won in 2016.
