Westside runs to win to keep D4 girls’ soccer title

ORANGEVILLE – The Westside Thunder kept the District 4 high school girls’ soccer title Monday with a 5-0 victory over the Emmanuel Christian Eagles on their own field Monday.

Westside had won the title in 2019 while the 2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled due to the global pandemic.

The win also gave Westside a sweep of this year’s school year titles as the Thunder won the senior boys’ championship in the final.

Crane and Russell struck for two goals apiece in the girls’ final while Bigler had the other one.

The Norwell Varsity Reds dropped the Centre Dufferin Royals 6-1 in the consolation final.

Zoey Moore had a pair of goals for Norwell while single goals were added by Sarah Zemmelink, Ella Black, Milana Perri and MacKenzie Vandermeer.

Tara Isama had the goal for Centre Dufferin.

In the semifinals earlier in the day, Westside dumped Centre Dufferin 11-0 and Emmanuel Christian edged Norwell 2-1.

Bigler and LeMesurier had hat tricks for Westside in the win over Centre Dufferin. Jin added a pair of goals while Cockman, Mammoliti and Sproule also scored.

B. Reinink and H. VanSydenborgh scored for Emmanuel Christian against Norwell while M. Perri had the goal for the Varsity Reds.

The wins give Westside an unbeaten run through their league season as they won all four of their regular-season games.

Both teams in the D4 final advance to CWOSSA tournaments next week, Westside at the AA tournament at Brantford May 24 and 26 and Emmanuel Christian at the A tournament at Delhi May 25 and 26.
