Westside seniors, Norwell juniors grab D4 volleyball titles

ORANGEVILLE – The Westside Thunder claimed the District 4 high school senior boys’ volleyball championship Monday with a 3-2 victory over the Emmanuel Christian Eagles of Fergus.

Westside took the first two sets of the final, winning 25-20 and 25-15, before the Eagles came back with two wins by the same scores as the Thunder’s wins. Emmanuel Christian won the third set 25-15 and the fourth 25-20 to send the match to the tie-breaker set.

The Thunder won that set 15-13 to claim their first senior title since 2003. The Norwell Varsity Reds had won every championship since that win by Westside.

Westside and Emmanuel Christian had both finished the regular season at 9-1.

Both teams advance to CWOSSA tournaments later this week as Westside goes to the AA tournament Wednesday and Thursday at Simcoe and Emmanuel Christian moves on to the A tournament Wednesday at Breslau.

The Norwell Varsity Reds captured the D4 junior title by sweeping the Wellington Heights Wolverines 3-0 at Mount Forest Monday.

Norwell won 25-9, 25-14 and 25-17.

As was the case in the senior final, the two junior championship-game combatants had completed the regular season with 9-1 records.

For Norwell, the junior title win was their first since 2015 when the Varsity Reds won for the ninth consecutive year. The Westside Thunder claimed the crown in 2016 and 2017.

No school other than Norwell or Westside has won a D4 boys’ volleyball title, junior or senior, since now-defunct Arthur DHS won junior in 2001.

Norwell moves on to the CWOSSA AA junior championship tournament Wednesday and Thursday at Simcoe and Wellington Heights is to compete in the CWOSSA A junior tournament at Breslau Wednesday.
