Wilmot pulls away, Thistles on edge of an ousting
FERGUS – The Fergus Thistles are on the brink of elimination following an 11-8 loss to the Wilmot Wild Monday night in Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League playoff action at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex.
The win gives Wilmot a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five West Division semifinal.
Five consecutive goals starting just before the midway point of the game broke a 5-5 tie and pushed Wilmot to the win. The five goals included two power-play markers and another one with the Wild playing shorthanded.
Nick Aitchison struck for a game-high five goals for the Thistles while single goals were netted by J.J. Swanston, Ryan Litt and Carter Hyndman. Adam Lantz had four assists while Cameron Angst had three, Brodie Schafer and Hyndman had two each and Sam MacDonald and Swanston had one each.
Matt Wyman and Kent Radbourne collected hat tricks for Wilmot while Tyler Nagy and Blake Wideman scored twice each and Derek Jensen added the other goal. Colten Besse gathered four assists with three apiece going to Radbourne and Wideman, two each to Dylan Kuntz, Jensen and Nagy and one each to Wyman and Ethan Warden.
Wilmot outshot Fergus 55-48 and went 3-for-11 on its power play while the Thistles went 3-for-6.
Fergus goalie Tyson Reeves was charged with the loss although he made 44 saves. Reyd Fitton picked up the win for Wilmot with 40 saves.
Game 3 is set for Thursday at Wilmot arena at 8 p.m.
If the Thistles win that game, Game 4 is to be played Friday at Fergus starting at 8 p.m.
