Win in overtime is Storm’s fifth consecutive victory

MISSISSAUGA – The Guelph Storm made it five wins in a row Wednesday when they edged the Mississauga Steelheads 2-1 in overtime in an OHL schoolday game at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre.

Of the five wins, two have come in overtime and another came in a shootout.

Michael Buchinger, who has signed an entry-level NHL contract with the St. Louis Blues, opened the scoring for the Storm at 5:43 of the first period. Max Namestnikov and Braeden Bowman assisted on the power-play goal.

It stood as the game’s only goal until Zander Veccia tied it for Mississauga at 1:06 of the third period. Assists went to Charlie Callaghan and Parker Von Richter.

Buchinger returned to score the winner 55 seconds into overtime. Matthew Poitras and Bowman collected assists on the goal.

Mississauga outshot the Storm 41-20 in the game as the locals had seven shots or fewer in each period and the Steelheads had 12 or more in each of the regulation periods.

The Storm scored on its lone power play of the game while Mississauga was scoreless on two power plays.

Brayden Gillespie had 40 saves in the Guelph net in his first game in 11 days while Alessio Beglieri had 18 saves for Mississauga.

The Storm moves into a tie for fourth in the Western Conference with the win. The Saginaw Spirit are at 30-24-2-1 and have a game in hand on the Storm who are at 29-24-4-1. Owen Sound Attack are two points back in sixth at 28-22-4-1, but have three games in hand on the Guelph side.

Wednesday’s game was the first of four consecutive road games for the Storm. They’re to play the Soo Greyhounds (ninth in Western Conference at 17-26-9-6) in Sault Ste. Marie’s GFL Memorial Gardens Friday at 7:07 p.m., the Flint Firebirds (seventh in Western Conference at 27-26-4-1) at Flint’s Dort Financial Center Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Kitchener Rangers (eighth in Western Conference at 26-26-4-0) at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium Tuesday at 7 p.m.
