Windsor Lancers slip by Gryphon basketball women
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons grabbed the lead in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold on as they were edged 76-71 by the Windsor Lancers in OUA women’s basketball league play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
The Gryphs trailed 20-14 at the end of the first half before they battled back to tie it at 36-36 at halftime. Windsor shot ahead again in the third quarter as they carried a 60-57 lead into the final quarter.
Modupe Okeowo hit a jumper 49 seconds into the fourth quarter to put the Gryphs ahead 61-60, but the lead was gone a couple of minutes later and the hosts never led again.
MacKeely Shantz struck for 17 points for the Gryphs while Skyla Minaker had 13, Ashley Wheeler had 12 and Ivana Vujadinovic had 11. Shantz and Minaker each had five rebounds while Minaker also had eight assists and five steals.
Windsor had five players in double digits in scoring – Harriet Carey with 15, Kayah Clarke with 14, Kaylee Anagnostopoulos and Samantha Gucciardi each with 13 and Eve Uwayesu with 12. Anagnostopoulos also had 11 rebounds and eight assists while Olivia Osamusali had 10 rebounds and Carey had four steals.
The Gryphs fall to 9-6 with the loss while Windsor improves to 12-3.
The Gryphs have a pair of road games next weekend as they’re to play the Nipissing Lakers (3-13) at North Bay Friday night and the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-14) at Sudbury Saturday.
