Wingham puts a halt to Patriots’ winning streak

WINGHAM – The Mount Forest Patriots surrendered a goal in each period as they were edged 3-1 by the Wingham Ironmen in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at Wingham’s Wescast Complex rink.

Wingham had the lone goal of the first period while the teams scored once apiece in the second.

Jack Birkett had a power-play goal for Mount Forest while Thomas Haffner and Troy Weber assisted on the goal.

Tanner Reid, Jacob Bishop and Jamie Huber each had a goal for the Ironmen while assists went to Brayden Fischer, Carter Collinson and Nick Verbeek.

The Patriots outshot Wingham 32-29 and went 1-for-5 on their power play while the Ironmen were scoreless on three power plays.

David Lobsinger was charged with the loss in Mount Forest’s net while Jamie Brock picked up the win for Wingham.

The Patriots are second in the Pollock Division at 18-7-1-0. They trail Wingham (21-5-1-0).

The loss put an end to an eight-game winning streak for the Patriots as they hadn’t lost since they were doubled 4-2 by the Mitchell Hawks Nov. 11 at Mount Forest.

The Patriots are to host the Walkerton Hawks (7-15-3-3) Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex and play the Hanover Barons (8-15-1-2) at Hanover’s P and H Centre Sunday at 2 p.m.
