Wingham puts an end to Patriots’ winning streak
WINGHAM – The Mount Forest Patriots saw their 13-game winning streak come to an end Friday night as they surrendered three goals in the second period in a 5-2 setback to the Wingham Ironmen in Provincial Junior Hockey League play at the Wescast Complex rink.
The loss was Mount Forest’s first since the Patriots were downed 6-3 by the Kincardine Bulldogs at Kincardine Nov. 2.
The result cuts Mount Forest’s lead atop the Pollock Division to five points as runner-up Wingham ups its total to 44 points at 21-7-1-1. The Patriots lead at 24-3-1-0 and have two games in hand on the Ironmen.
The teams scored once apiece in the first period before the hosts shot to a 4-2 lead by the end of the second.
Troy Weber and Blair Butchart had the goals for the Patriots while assists went to William Black, Chet Philips, Michael Stefanelli and Jack Birkett.
Justin Donnelly and Logan Tolton scored twice apiece for Wingham while Brady Becker had the other goal. Getting one assist apiece were Grant Stevens, Rhys Vollmer, Chase Meurs, Becker and Kyle Stanbury.
Wingham outshot the Patriots 40-32 thanks to a 33-15 advantage in the first two periods. Mount Forest outshot the Ironmen 17-7 in the third.
Mason Kameka took the loss for the Patriots with 35 saves while Devon Carson picked up the win for Wingham with 30 saves.
The Patriots are to begin a series of three consecutive games with the fifth-place Hanover Barons (14-11-1-2) Saturday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 8 p.m.
The Patriots and Barons are also to play in Mount Forest Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. and at Hanover’s P and H Centre Jan. 10 at 8 p.m.
