Wingham turns on power to down Patriots

MOUNT FOREST – The Wingham Ironmen struck for four power-play goals and a shorthanded marker as they downed the Mount Forest Patriots 9-4 in Provincial Junior Hockey League playoff action Sunday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots scored the first goal of the game, but Wingham led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 6-3 after the second.

The victory gives Wingham a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Pollock Division final. The visiting team has won each time out.

Michael Stefanelli struck for two goals for Mount Forest, including one on a penalty shot. Klayton Hoelscher and Ryley Cribbin also scored while single assists were given to Cribbin, Troy Weber, Chet Philips, Brady Becker and Stefanelli.

Jamie Huber and Rhys Vollmer scored twice each for Wingham while single goals were netted by Connor Gibson, Parker Gibbings, Carter Collinson, Jacob Bishop and Tanner Reid. Shane Vollmer and Kyle Stanbury each had two assists and Collinson, Logan Tolton, Tyson Koopman, Josiah Kraayenbrink, Corey Restoule, Chris Adlys and Bishop had one each.

Wingham outshot the Patriots 37-30 and went 4-for-9 on their power play while Mount Forest went 3-for-7.

Devon Carson made 26 saves to get the win for Wingham. David Lobsinger started in net for the Patriots and he took the loss. He had 24 saves before being replaced by Aidan Quish at 4:50 of the third. Quish faced five shots during his stint.

Fourth game of the series is to go at Wingham’s North Huron Wescast Complex Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

Fifth game is scheduled for Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Mount Forest.

The series winner is to face the Carruthers Division champion in the North Conference final. Alliston Hornets lead the Penetang Kings 2-0 in the best-of-seven Carruthers final.
