
Wolverines capture their first senior girls’ volleyball title
MOUNT FOREST – The Wellington Heights Wolverines claimed their first District 4 high school senior girls’ volleyball title following a pair of wins in the league’s one-day playoff Tuesday on their home court.
The Wolverines advanced to the final with a 3-1 victory over the Norwell Varsity Reds in the semifinals. Wellington Heights won 27-29, 25-17, 25-15, 25-19.
It was guaranteed to be a first-time champion when the Westside Thunder edged the defending champion Centre Dufferin Royals 3-2 in the other semifinal. Westside won 25-13, 25-9, 24-26, 25-27, 15-8.
The championship match was a hard-fought affair with the Wolverines prevailing 3-2. Wellington Heights won 17-25, 25-17, 25-15, 24-26, 15-8.
Wellington Heights had finished atop the standings at 9-1 while Centre Dufferin was second at 7-3 and Westside and Norwell both finished at 5-5.
Junior Girls’ Volleyball
Westside swept a pair of matches to win its first junior girls’ volleyball league title in four years.
The Thunder defeated Norwell 25-16, 25-12, 25-6 in the final.
Westside had won its semifinal 25-21, 25-21, 25-18 over the Erin Raiders.
Norwell took the other semifinal 20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-14, 15-7 over the Emmanuel Christian Eagles.
The championship win completes an unbeaten D4 season for Westside as the Thunder were 10-0 in the regular season. Emmanuel Christian finished at 6-4 while Norwell was at 5-5 and Erin was at 3-7.
