Wolverines dropped into play-in game in boys hockey

ORANGEVILLE – It took until the final game of the District 4/10 high school boys’ hockey league’s regular season to set the opening-round playoff pairing.

The host Orangeville Bears dropped the Wellington Heights Wolverines 7-3 Thursday at Orangeville’s Tony Rose arena to finish regular-season play.

Scoring details were not reported.

The result left Orangeville second and Wellington Heights eighth in the nine-team league. By finishing eighth, the Wolverines host the Centennial Spartans in a play-in game Friday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 2:30 p.m. Winner advances to next week’s quarter-finals and is to play the first-place Centre Wellington Falcons at Fergus Tuesday.

Centre Wellington finished first at 8-1-1-0 and was followed by Orangeville (8-2-0-0), Bishop Macdonell Celtics (8-2-0-0), Norwell Varsity Reds (6-3-1-0), Ross Royals (5-5-0-0), Guelph CVI Green Gaels (3-6-1-0), Westside Thunder (2-6-1-1), Wellington Heights (3-7-0-0) and Centennial (0-10-0-0).

Other quarter-final games Tuesday have Ross playing Norwell at Palmerston and Bishop Mac hosting GCVI at the West End arena. Orangeville rivals Orangeville and Westside are to play their quarter-final Wednesday at the Tony Rose arena.

Semifinal winners advance to the semifinals that are to be played Thursday or Friday next week.
