Wolverines net three in the first to top Ross Royals

GUELPH – The Wellington Heights Wolverines scored three goals in the first period on their way to a 5-1 victory over the Ross Royals in their District 4/10 high school boys’ hockey season opener Friday at the Victoria Road arena.

The Wolverines might have caught the Royals just at the right time as a combination of a few factors left Ross with 10 players from its normal lineup for the game, although the Royals did add four ‘call-ups’ to give them 14 for the game, their second of the season.

The Wolverines had 18 for their season opener.

Ross’s roster was depleted due to injuries, class trips, CWOSSA quarter-final football the night before and the Royals having teams in both the District 10 junior and senior volleyball finals later in the day.

Wellington Heights led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 4-1 after the second.

Will Lewis had a pair of goals for the Wolverines while Lucas Fidler, Charlie McKenzie and Jack Weiser scored once each. Jack Weiser also had two assists while Owen Weiser and Charlie McKenzie had one apiece.

Chris Cabeldu scored the goal for Ross with Noah Sabourin and Curtis Golden getting assists on the goal.

Jacksen McKenzie was in net for Wellington Heights while Ronan Booth was in net for Ross.

While the win came in the opening game of the season for the Wolverines, the loss for Ross leaves the Royals at 1-1-0.

Regular-season play in the eight-team league is to resume Tuesday. The Wolverines are to play the Norwell Varsity Reds (1-0-0) at the Palmerston arena at 1 p.m. and the Orangeville Bears (0-1-0) and Guelph CVI Green Gaels (0-1-0) are to clash at 4 p.m. at the West End arena.
