Yates, Britain into 3,000m relay quarter-finals

MONTREAL – Guelph’s Westley Yates helped Great Britain reach the quarter-finals in the men’s 3,000-metre team event at the world junior short track speed skating championships.

Britain finished second in its first round heat race with a time of 4:14.933 while Hungary won in 4:11.596. Other members of Britain’s team were Kyle Ross-Waddell, Niall Treacy and Peter Riches.

However, Britain was eliminated with a fourth-place finish in its quarter-final. Netherlands won the race in 4:01.729 and was followed by United States (4:07.694), Italy (4:09.147) and Britain (4:10.244). Netherlands and U.S. advanced to the semifinals.

Yates finished fourth in the men’s 1,000m preliminaries and failed to advance. Chang Hyun Woo of Korea won in 1:27.010 while Attila Talabos of Hungary was second in 1:27.083, Nikita Nemiro of Ukraine third in 1:29.195 and Yates fourth in 1:29.223.

Chang and Talabos advanced to the heats by finishing in the top two while Nemiro advanced on time.
