York Lions leave Gryphon hockey women behind

TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons surrendered the first four goals of the game as they suffered a 5-2 loss to the York Lions in OUA women’s hockey play Friday night at York’s Canlan Sports Centre.

York scored the lone goal of the first period and added three more in the first half of the second period to grab the four-goal lead.

The Gryphs scored late in the second and added a power-play goal eight minutes into the third before York completed the scoring about four and a half minutes later with its second power-play goal of the game.

Madison Melo and Gabby Smyth scored the goals for the Gryphs while assists went to Miranda Lantz, Sydney Davison, Sophie Rodenburg and Lauren Ianni

Brooke Anderson tallied twice for York while single goals were added by Ellen Donaldson, Taylor Coward and Kelsey McHolm. Taylor Davison had three assists while Courtney Gardiner and Sarah Power had two apiece and Leah Hibbert and Ava Ricker-Singh had one each.

The Lions outshot the Gryphs 32-22, holding Guelph to less than 10 shots in each period. The Gryphs went 1-for-6 on their power play while York went 2-for-3.

Aurore Beaulieu took the loss in the Gryphon net. She had 27 saves while York’s Lauren Dubie had 20 saves for the win.

The loss leaves the Gryphs in a tie for sixth place with the Western Mustangs. The Gryphs are at 10-7-1-3 while Western’s at 8-8-3-2. The Gryphs have a game in hand and hold the tie-breaker on the Mustangs. Top eight qualify for the playoffs.

Toronto Varsity Blues have clinched first. They lead at 15-4-1-2 while York is second at 14-7-0-2. They’re followed by the Nipissing Lakers at 13-6-1-1, Waterloo Warriors at 11-8-3-1, Brock Badgers at 11-6-1-3, Guelph, Western, Queen’s Gaels at 9-9-3-1, Ryerson Rams at 9-8-2-2, Laurentian Voyageurs at 6-8-4-3, Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at 4-13-5-0, Laurier Golden Hawks at 1-13-3-6 and Windsor Lancers at 1-15-2-3.

The Gryphs have three games to go in their regular season, all next week. They’re to host Ontario Tech Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre and play Nipissing in North Bay Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Laurentian at Sudbury Saturday at 4 p.m.
