After leading by 16, Gryphon men edged by Brock

GUELPH – The Brock Badgers hit a last-second three-pointer to rebound from a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter to edge the Guelph Gryphons 92-91 in OUA men’s basketball play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Dezayne Mingo of the Gryphs scored the first six points of the final quarter as he hit a jumper, a layup and two free throws to put the hosts ahead 78-62 with 8:09 to go. However, the locals missed 11 of 12 field-goal attempts the remainder of the game as 11 of their final 13 points were on free throws. Brock sank 11 of its final 14 field-goal attempts to eke out the win.

The Gryphs led 25-23 at the end of the first quarter, 55-44 at halftime and 72-62 after the third quarter.

Mingo led all scorers with 28 points and he also had five rebounds and eight assists. Shaathon Walker and Emmanuel Ansah each had 15 points while Viktoras Nausedas had 13 and Adrian Morra added 12. Ansah and Nausedas each had six rebounds while Morra had five and two steals. Ansah had Guelph’s lone block.

Micheal Okeke hit the winning three-pointer to become the team’s top scorer in the game with 19 points. Davante Hackett had 19 while Jevon Brown netted 12 and Andrew McKenna and Jordan Tchuente collected 10 apiece. McKenna and Thierry Tshibola each had five rebounds while Tshibola also had four assists and Brown had three steals. Michael Matas and Marlon Lestin each had a block.

The Gryphs shot 43 percent on field goals, 29 percent on three-pointers, 79 percent on free throws and scored 36 points in the paint, 14 off Brock turnovers, five on second chances, 20 from the bench and also committed 11 turnovers.

Brock shot 51 percent on field goals, 37 percent on three-pointers, 82 percent on free throws, scored 48 points in the paint, six off Guelph turnovers, 13 on second chances, 48 from the bench and also had 11 turnovers.
