Another double-digit outing as Royals drop Hamilton

HAMILTON – The Guelph Royals continued to make contact with the baseball as they gathered their third consecutive win in Intercounty Baseball League play by dropping the Hamilton Cardinals 11-6 Friday night at Bernie Arbour Stadium.

The Royals connected for 13 hits to score double-digit runs for the third straight game while three pitchers combined to hold Hamilton to six runs, one earned, off six hits and seven walks.

The Royals led 1-0 after four innings, then went on a scoring spree with two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth, two in the eighth and three in the ninth.

All six of Hamilton’s runs came in the bottom of the ninth to push the game beyond three and a half hours in duration.

Guelph Kyle Kush was walked to start the third inning. J.D. Williams was also walked to send Kush to second and, with one out, Kush scored the go-ahead run on a single by Conner Morro.

Kush and Morro were the lone Royals to get extra-base hits as each had a double. Morro, Chris Robinson and Brendan Keys each had two singles while Williams, Ethan Hammond, Malik Collymore, Ashton Patterson and Kush had one apiece.

Hector Yan started and picked up the win for the Royals as he had 15 strikeouts in six innings. He limited Hamilton to two hits, but walked five.

Darren Shred relieved for two innings and gave up a hit. He had four strikeouts.

Darius Barlas moved over from second base to pitch the ninth and he was tagged for six runs, one earned, off three hits and two walks. The Cardinals scored five runs after a two-out error by Hammond who moved in from right field to play second when Barlas moved to the mound. Three of Hamilton’s runs scored on a homer by Luis Bernardo.

Dennis Dei Baning hit a double and single for Hamilton while Bernardo had his homer and Quin Cotton struck for a double. Getting one single apiece were Laine Renaud and Luis Pimentel-Guerrero.

Jayson Wilbur took the loss for Hamilton. He surrendered three earned runs off six hits and three walks in five innings before Brett Lawson gave up three earned runs off three hits and a walk in a single inning. Rashil Bhat yielded two earned runs off two hits and three walks in two innings and Jake Dean was touched for three earned runs off two hits and three walks in an inning. Wilbur and Bhat each had three strikeouts.

The Royals leapfrog the Cardinals into fifth place in the standings at 16-19. Welland Jackfish lead at 25-8 while Barrie Baycats are second at 22-10, Kitchener Panthers third at 21-14 and Toronto Maple Leafs fourth at 16-16. Behind the Royals are the Cardinals at 15-19, London Majors at 11-20 and Brantford Red Sox at 6-26.
