Another win lifts Thistles out of conference basement

FERGUS – The Fergus Thistles posted their third win in four Ontario Junior C Lacrosse League outings as they defeated the Halton Hills Bulldogs 12-8 Saturday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Thistles opened the season with five consecutive losses, but have improved their record to 3-6-0 with the current hot streak.

Halton Hills led 3-2 at the end of the first period before the Thistles pulled ahead 9-7 by the end of the second.

Evan McDougall had a seven-point outing for the Thistles with four goals and three assists. Logan Joyes had two goals while single goals were netted by Tye Sanderson, Nate Long, Spencer Aitchison, Blake Harrison, Rory Peters and Cooper Fleet. Sanderson, Joyes, Harrison and Fleet each had two assists while single assists went to Aiden McDougall, Long, Connor Schmidt and Eddie McDonald.

Ethan Hayens had a hat trick for Halton Hills while Tye Ingram and Matthew Labute added two goals apiece and Nolan Peet also scored. Jared Bettovil had two assists and Cody Swindlehurst, Branden Peet, Jaxon Reay and Nolan Peet each had one.

The Thistles outshot the Bulldogs 46-36 thanks to a 16-7 advantage in the third period.

Eric Krauter had 28 saves for the Thistles while Will Patterson had 34 for Halton Hills.

The win allowed the Thistles to leapfrog the Bulldogs in the Western Conference standings as Halton Hills falls to 2-9-1.

Wilmot Wild lead the conference at 10-1-0 and they’re followed by the Six Nations Stealth at 7-2-0, Barrie Bombers at 6-5-0, Orangeville Northmen at 5-6-0 and Brantford Warriors at 3-7-1.

The Thistles are to play the Six Nations Stealth at the Gaylord Powless Arena in Ohsweken Sunday at 2 p.m.
