Anselmini hat trick sparks Whalers to win over Goderich

GODERICH – Ty Anselmini’s hat trick powered the Fergus Whalers to a 6-1 win over the Goderich Flyers in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Complex.

Anselmini scored a pair of goals in the first period to start the Whalers to the win. Fergus would score three times before Goderich netted its lone goal and the Whalers scored three more after it.

The Whalers led 2-0 after the first and 5-1 after the second.

Wes Duiker, Jett Morningstar and Boden Brimmell struck for the other goals for Fergus while Andrew McClure had two assists and Brimmell, Zach Nault, Ryan Contini, Tyler Ewald, Anselmini and Evan Ahearn had one apiece.

James Bender scored for Goderich with help from Leland Weber and Jeremy Hamilton.

Shots on goal were not recorded.

Bradley Boville was in net for Fergus and Christian DeJong was in net for Goderich.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 33-4-0-2 (W;-L-OTL-T) and are followed by the Mount Forest Patriots (28-7-2-0), Kincardine Bulldogs (21-11-2-5), Walkerton Capitals (17-18-2-2), the Whalers (16-16-3-2), Wingham Ironmen (16-18-3-1), Mitchell Hawks (11-23-3-2) and Goderich (3-32-1-2).

The Whalers have a 3-in-3 next weekend as they’re to play the Ironmen at Wingham Saturday at 8 p.m., host Walkerton Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex and play the Hawks at Mitchell at 2 p.m. on Family Day Monday.
