Baseball Gryphons sweep McMaster to start league play

DUNDAS – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA baseball season by taking a doubleheader from the McMaster Marauders Saturday at Volunteer Field in Dundas.

The Gryphs took the opening game 5-4 and the nightcap 8-0. That extends Guelph’s win streak over the Marauders to five games as they won all three matches with the Marauders last year.

Details were not available.

The Gryphs are to host the Carleton Ravens today (Sept. 10) in their home opener doubleheader at Hastings Stadium. Opening game is to start at 11 a.m. with the second game following around 2 p.m.

All of Guelph’s regular-season games are to be doubleheaders with the team scheduled to play both Saturday and Sunday each weekend with one of the days being a home doubleheader at Hastings Stadium.

They’re to host the York Lions Sept. 16, Brock Badgers Sept. 24 and Laurier Golden Hawks Oct. 1.

The regular season is used for seeding for the four regional tournaments. The Gryphs hosted Brock and McMaster in the West Regional last year.

Each regional champion advances to the OUA championship tournament.

The Gryphs won the West Regional last year to gain a berth in the OUA Final Four weekend at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener where they finished as bronze medalists. Guelph was edged 1-0 by Queen’s Gaels in the semifinals, but rebounded for a 16-11 win over the Waterloo Warriors in the bronze-medal game.

Queen’s took the gold-medal game 13-11 over the Toronto Varsity Blues.

McMaster is to host this year’s West Regional at Bernie Arbour Stadium Oct. 6 and 7 and the OUA Final Four there Oct. 13 and 14.
