Bears pull away in second half to grab first in senior hoops

GUELPH – A strong second half lifted the Orangeville Bears to a 46-35 victory over the Centennial Spartans in the game that decided first place in the District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball league.

Orangeville led 9-8 at the end of the first quarter while the teams were tied 17-17 at halftime. The Bears shot ahead 37-26 by the end of the third quarter, thanks partly to four three-pointers drained by Emma Firth.

Firth finished with 20 points while Ayla Corrigale had 14, Lilian Beattie added six and Emily Wheeler netted five.

Hayley McMillan led Centennial with 16 points while Nica Borghese collected seven and Taliah Pellizzari had six.

Orangeville finished first at 12-2 with Centennial second at 11-3, Guelph CVI Green Gaels third at 10-4, Ross Royals fourth at 9-5, Bishop Macdonell Celtics fifth at 7-7, Lourdes Crusaders sixth at 5-9, Centre Wellington Falcons seventh at 1-13 and St. James Lions eighth, also at 1-13. Centre Wellington won the tiebreaker with St. James.

Quarter-finals are to be played Tuesday.

Centennial is to host Centre Wellington at 3:30 p.m. while the other three games are to start at 4 p.m. They have Orangeville hosting St. James, GCVI hosting Lourdes and Ross hosting Bishop Macdonell.

Samrawit Tesfit Ezra collected 21 points for Ross while Sikar Tesfit Ezra had seven.

Eva Wenger had eight points for St. James while Sam Griffiths had six.

 

Lourdes 42 Centre Wellington 38

Olivia Doucette hit for 18 points for Lourdes.

Lara Thys had 15 for Centre Wellington.

 

Bishop Macdonell 49 Guelph CVI 44

Talya Kridli connected for 25 points for Bishop Mac while Sydney Richardson had 14.

Jasmine Liban had 15 for GCVI while Molly Hannay had nine.

 

Junior Girls’ Basketball

Bishop Macdonell 48 Guelph CVI 24

Bishop Mac completed an undefeated regular season with the win. Maeve Bedard led the Celtics with 12 points while Sophia Anstett had nine.

Gurmen Judge and Jenna Genidy each had eight for GCVI.

 

Centre Wellington 50 Lourdes 36

Maggie Long had 12 points for Centre Wellington while G. Rai added 11.

Jwokmeer Omot collected 24 for Lourdes.

 

Ross 65 St. James 26

Camryn Stam had 14 points for Centennial.
