Blitz yield three in second in loss in playoff opener

STRATFORD – The Erin Blitz surrendered three goals in the second period as they were doubled 6-3 by the Stratford Fighting Irish in the opening game of their best-of-five WOSHL quarter-final series Saturday at the William Allman arena.

The teams scored once apiece in the first period and each also netted two goals in the third.

Jacob Miller, Maxwell Lightfoot and Sean Caruso collected single goals for the Blitz while Liam Galton, Mike Kri and Jeff White each had one assist.

The three goals in the second period for Stratford were part of four consecutive goals for the Fighting Irish with Cooper Leitch scoring three of them. Ray Robbins, Cameron Stokes and Sean O’Brien each had a single goal while Graham Brulotte, Stokes and Robbins each had two assists and Brody Smith, Matt Granger and Tye Campbell each had one assist.

The teams each had 28 shots on net while the Blitz went 2-for-6 on their power play and held Stratford scoreless on two power plays, but did net a shorthanded goal.

Brayden Kelso had 22 saves for Erin while Darren Smith had 25 saves for Stratford.

Second game of the series is set for Sunday at 7:15 p.m. at the Centre 2000 arena in Erin while the third game slated to go Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Stratford.
