Bowman nets OT winner as Guelph Storm nips Sarnia

GUELPH – Braeden Bowman’s goal after almost two and a half minutes of overtime lifted the Guelph Storm to a 3-2 victory over the Sarnia Sting in Ontario Hockey League play Sunday at the Sleeman Centre.

The win followed a 5-2 win over the Owen Sound Attack at Owen Sound Saturday and a loss by an identical score to the Soo Greyhounds at the Sleeman Centre Friday night.

Sunday, the Storm led 2-1 at the end of the first period while Sarnia scored the lone goal of the second and the third was scoreless.

Jake Karabela and Thomas Budnick scored a second shy of three minutes apart in the first period for Guelph. Assists went to Bowman, Jett Luchanko, Max Namestnikov and Karabela. Luchanko and Michael Buchinger assisted on the winning goal.

Marki Sikic and Ryan Brown had a goal apiece for Sarnia while assists were awarded to Zach Filak, Hughston Hurt and Easton Wainwright.

The Storm outshot the Sting 26-19 and went 2-for-5 on their power play. Sarnia didn’t have a power play.

Damian Slavik had 17 saves for the Storm and Karsen Chartier had 23 for the Sting.

The win leaves the Storm at 23-13-2-1 while Sarnia falls to 15-21-2-0.

Next up for the Storm are a pair of road games on the weekend as they’re to play Friday against the Greyhounds (25-11-2-1) in Sault Ste. Marie at the GFL Memorial Gardens at 7:07 p.m. and Saturday against the Saginaw Spirit (25-11-0-1) at Saginaw’s Dow Event Center at 7:05 p.m.
