Carleton hits for five straight to top Gryphon hockey men

OTTAWA – The Carleton Ravens connected for the final five goals of the game as they dropped the Guelph Gryphons 8-2 in OUA men’s hockey play Friday night at Carleton’s Ice House.

It was the second time in three games the Gryphs allowed eight goals.

Carleton led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 5-2 after the second.

Jonah De Simone and Anthony Tabak collected the goals for Guelph. Assists went to Hunter Brazier, Giordano Biondi, Liam Ham and Jacob Winterton.

Parker Aucoin, Simon Kerr, Reese Belton, Lukash Matthews, Majid Kaddoura, Brogan O’Brien, Matt Barberis and Oliver Castleman had a goal apiece for Carleton. Garrett Wright, Kieran Craig and Kaddoura each had two assists while Braeden Virtue, Alex Johnston, Blake Allan, Landon Roberts, Aaron Boyd, O’Brien, Castleman, Matthews, Aucoin and Nick McCarry each had one.

The Ravens outshot the Gryphs 53-23 and went 1-for-8 on their power play while the Gryphs were scoreless on five power plays, but did have a shorthanded goal.

Tanner Wickware had 45 saves for Guelph while Mark Grametbauer had 21 for Carleton.

The loss was the third in a row, all road games, and leaves the Gryphs at 8-9-0, good for fifth in the OUA West. Brock Badgers lead at 14-3-0 and are followed by the Toronto Varsity Blues (12-5-0), Toronto Metropolitan Bold (10-5-0), Lakehead Thunderwolves (8-7-1), the Gryphs, Windsor Lancers (7-8-0), Laurier Golden Hawks (5-11-2), Western Mustangs (5-11-0), York Lions (3-11-1) and Waterloo Warriors (3-13-1).

Carleton improves to 8-5-4 with the win. The Ravens are sixth in the OUA East.

The Gryphs are to play their sixth consecutive road game and complete the 2023 portion of their season Saturday when they’re to take on the Ottawa Gee-Gees at the Minto Sports Complex. Game time is 3 p.m.

Ottawa is tied for third in the OUA East with the McGill Redbirds as both have 10-4-1 records.
