Centre Dufferin Royals capture girls’ hockey honours

SHELBURNE – The Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne claimed the District 4 high school girls’ hockey championship with a 4-2 win over the Wellington Heights Wolverines of Mount Forest in Wednesday’s championship match at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex.

Scoring details were not available.

The championship match was played a week after the semifinals that ended with Centre Dufferin dropping the Westside Thunder of Orangeville 11-1 and Wellington Heights surprising the Norwell Varsity Reds of Palmerston 4-3.

The Royals finished the regular season atop the league standings at 9-3-0-0 (W-L-T-OTL) while Wellington Heights was third at 5-4-3-0.

Centre Dufferin advances to the CWOSSA A/AA tournament at Simcoe, Waterford and Langton Monday and Tuesday.

The Royals are in a pool with the St. David Celtics of Waterloo, Kincardine Knights and Holy Trinity Titans of Simcoe.

St. James Lions of Guelph are also in the tournament and are in the other pool with Simcoe Composite Sabres, Sacred Heart Crusaders of Walkerton and Southwood Sabres of Cambridge.
