Creeks win at home in league play, but lose on road

GUELPH – The Guelph Silvercreeks had a win and a pair of losses in Inter County Baseball Association 22U play last week.

The locals had an 8-2 win over the Kitchener Junior Panthers at Hastings Stadium Wednesday, but lost road games to the Hamilton Junior Cardinals (11-6 Monday at Bernie Arbour Stadium) and Welland Junior Jackfish (14-11 Thursday at Welland Sports Complex).

Ryan Kush held Kitchener to two earned runs, all in the first inning, in eight innings of work. He had eight strikeouts while Zach Ashworth pitched the ninth and had a strikeout.

Kitchener led 2-1 after the opening inning but the Creeks replied with two runs in the second, two in the fourth and three in the sixth.

The Creeks clouted 11 hits in the match and were error free while Kitchener had eight hits and committed four errors.

Jackson Wahl hit a triple and single and drove in three runs for the Creeks while Jacob McWhirter had a double, single and stolen base. Corey Morro had two singles and a stolen base and Aiden Mendonza hit two singles and drove in a run with a sacrifice hit. Alex Camillo hit a double and Owen Sartor had a single and an RBI.

Before the league outings, the Creeks also reached the quarter-finals of the Mississauga North tournament before being ousted with an 11-0 loss to the host Mississauga North Tigers.

They had qualified for the playoff round by finishing second in their division with two wins and a loss. They defeated Markham 11-1 and Etobicoke 6-5, but fell 4-3 to Burlington.

The Creeks are second in the ICBA standings at 5-3-1, trailing only the Brantford Junior Red Sox who lead at 6-1-0. Welland is third at 4-2-1 and is followed by Kitchener at 3-6-1, St. Thomas Tomcats at 2-3-1, Waterloo Tigers at 2-4-1, Hamilton at 2-2-0 and Stratford Nationals at 1-4-1.

The Creeks are to play in the Vaughan tournament this weekend.

Next league outing is set for June 21 against Hamilton at Hastings Stadium starting at 7:30 p.m.
