Defending champion Royals triumphant to start rugby seasons

The three-time defending champion Ross Royals opened their District 4/10 high school senior boys’ rugby season with a 22-0 victory over the Guelph CVI Green Gaels Wednesday at the University of Guelph’s Varsity Field.

Isaac Misener, Ely Sutton, Max LeBlanc and Drew McQueen each had a try for the Royals while Charlie Thurtell kicked a convert.

Scores from the day’s two other senior games – Centre Wellington Falcons at Centre Dufferin Royals and Centennial Spartans at Lourdes Crusaders – were not reported.

 

Girls’ Rugby

Two-time champion Royals of Shelburne took their season opener.

Lauren Smith had three tries while Abby Holiday had two tries and Mya Rickerby had a try and two converts. Julia Smith, Abi Wilson and Bryn Rutledge each had one try.

 

Junior Boys’ Rugby

Ross 40 Guelph CVI 5

The Royals scored six tries in the match between the previous two champions, GCVI winning it last year to put an end to a streak of eight consecutive title victories by Ross.

The Royals scored six tries in the match while the Gaels had one.

Williams had 15 points for Ross while E. Dowle had 10 and B. Sneddon and C. Jehlicka had five apiece.

Gruner-Whitehead had the try for GCVI.
